The Baked Goods Test

winter-baked-goods“It may look like I’m in deep thought, but 99% of the time I’m just thinking about what food I’m going to eat later.” – Bill Murray

What’s the easiest way to tell how great a particular place will be for outdoor fun? The baked goods test.

Sure there may be some information that describes the trails themselves. Anyone can boast about great trails, but homemade treats are a pretty strong indication of a place that is in fact welcoming, with beautiful trails.

When I arrive, I check out the brownies, cookies and muffins – and before hitting the trails, I just might try one. Why not? Makes one of the best second breakfasts ever.

What’s Your Favorite Thing to Make out of Snow?

alice

I have to admit , I wasn’t as enthusiastic as usual about a weekend away to enjoy the outdoors, considering the holiday season, without power (due to the ice storm), had been a bit like winter camping.

The arrival was promising – lots of snow. But the first day also brought rain. Still, it ends up that the rain created great packing snow, which is perfect for making:

  • forts
  • sculptures
  • winter treats – make a snowball and drizzle it with Bailey’s Irish Cream

So I make this little rabbit – and then I sat back in the snow and enjoyed a snowball with a little Bailey’s on top.

Which Kind of Apple is Your Favorite?

Whether you go apple picking, or walk to a local farmer’s market, don’t miss out on some of the season’s best.

Apparently the recent colder evenings are great conditions for making apples sweeter.

My batch from last weekend is nearly gone already, so I’ll be heading back to the farm on Saturday. It’s hard to improve on the perfection of a crisp fall apple, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down freshly baked apple crisp.

Music, Beer, Wine and …Sheep?

sheep_Tawse (1024x329)Do you prefer music in the city or the country?

I was lucky to be at two great music events this past weekend – friends hosted the band Tarantuela at their place in the city, and the following day, I joined other friends at Tawse Winery for their summer solstice concert.

Getting to any venue can provide it’s own entertainment. In the city, it’s easy to overhear random parts of conversations as you pass by people on the sidewalk (‘…if I stick to rum, I’m fine….then they arrived dressed as pirates…’). Whereas at the winery, in order to get to the stage, we followed a path beside the sheep.

This is the best time of year for outdoor music – everywhere.

How to See The Big Picture

Can’t see the forest for the trees? Get out of the forest.

This picture was taken during the Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race, but you don’t have to race, or even be on a boat to look at things from a different perspective. If you aren’t a fan of boats, look out from anywhere along the waterfront.

You might even see a new pal like this one swimming by…

So That’s What Dandelions Are For

Great weekend for cycling along the waterfront trail. At one point, I rounded a bend, and there was a large grass field dotted with dandelions, but one flower was moving – a lot. OK, since I noticed, this means I was taking my time on the bike – I like to look around at stuff.

In any case, I stopped to get a closer look. It wasn’t a dandelion at all – but a goldfinch having a snack in the grass.

He’s was actually much brighter than the flowers surrounding him, but the dandelions made a pretty good cover.

What would you call this sculpture?

Offhand, here are a few options:

  • Lessons in Not Lending Your Vehicle
  • The Answer to ‘Dude, where’s my car?’

The great weather today hinted that summer is just around the corner – a perfect day for walking around, soaking up the sunshine, and being entertained by what we see – art in all its forms,  however you define it.

Where did you find art today?

Pack Fun in Your Emergency Car Kit

pond skating

This rule isn’t meant to be broken.

I was away for the weekend, with the intention of going tobogganing today. Since my friends found a perfect pond for skating, the plans changed at the last minute. For the first time ever, I had forgotten to put my skates in the car. With this perfect weather, I didn’t want to miss out – so I made more than a few calls in order to line up some skates.

The pond, tucked between two hills, beside a tree-lined path, could have not been more perfect. My friends had shoveled a large portion of the pond yesterday, but what ended up being even more entertaining was creating a winding path on the rest of the surface. The sections with hairpins turns were the most fun to skate.

Now my skates are where they’re supposed to be – ready to take advantage of any opportunity to get out there.

Hop On

The sign in the playground read ‘3 to 12-year-olds only’. I took my chances hoping the fun police weren’t around.

When was the last time you hopped on a swing? It’s more fun than I remembered.

If your local playground is too busy during the day, wait until later when the children have gone to sleep. Then it’s play time for the big kids – us.

What is your favorite outside sound?

Mine would have to be the unmistakable chatter of a red squirrel telling me off as I’m walking down a trail. OK, he’s really just warning his pals that there might be danger, but imagining he’s putting me in my place makes me smile, every time.

A few days ago, when I returned home from a day of hiking, I noticed that the mail included a postcard – something that is becoming rare these days, but always a welcome surprise among the bills and flyers.  My friend had been traveling in the southern US and recommended music festivals in New Orleans and Pensacola.

She was so enthusiastic about these events that I was encouraged to take up the guitar again – almost. I decided to be kind to my neighbours’ ears and went to listen to local talent instead. This time of year, great outdoor music is easy to find – at a street corner, a festival or in the forest.
